Sunday School of Rock Concert - Dec 2019
“Christmas in New York”
It was another wonderful concert!
Sunday school of Rock is our Church Youth band, for any young people over the age of 11.
The Church had been decorated with a New York skyline in the conservatory, an also in the Sanctuary. The foyer was decorated with Christmas trees, and swathes of silk, where photos of the upcoming concert numbers were put up. We were welcomed into Central Park in the back hall, where we were greeted with over 400m of lights beautifully draped across the beams on the ceiling
The Concert started with a vibrant whole band piece: “Joy to the World”. This was followed by ‘Somewhere over the rainbow’, with Ethan as the soloist on the trumpet. Anna then sang the lyrical Lauren Daigle version of ‘Away in a Manger’.
Emily and Sophie sang James Bay’s ‘Let it go’ as a duet. Charlotte played the viola in the dynamic Haydn piece ‘Divertimento for viola and piano, 3rd movement’. Cynthia and Vicky sang the toe-tapping ‘Someone in the crowd’ from the film La La Land, with Hannah H as a guest pianist, and Rach W playing the flute. Hope played the drum-solo part in ‘the Drummer boy’, arranged by. Rach W.
Sophie sang the song ’Yours’ by Ella Henderson. Dan H and Jonathan A played the blue-sy number ‘Sir Duke’ by Stevie Wonder, and, for the final piece of the first half, the whole SSoR band performed a beautiful rendition of ‘Mary did you know?’ by Mary Lowry.
We had tasty seasonal refreshments in the interval.
The second half started with ‘Let it snow’ by Jules Styne. This was aptly introduced by Coralie, our compere for the evening! Jane, Sophie, Emily, Carrie and Natacha then sang ‘How far i’ll go’ by Lin-Manuel Miranda. After this Emily sang ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams.
Vicky then performed ‘Le Onde by Ludovico Einaudi. Cynthia sang ‘On Broadway’ by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. Dan H and Jonathan, his dad, did a moving rendition of Elton John’s ‘Sorry seems to be the hardest word’.
Dan B played the bass guitar solo on ‘Little Black Submarines, by the Black Keys. We were then entertained by ‘Bethlehemain Rhapsody’, with a familiar tune yet words about the Christmas story. The evening finished off with everyone in gold-sparkly hats playing ‘New York, New York’. we even had a paper/confetti cannon!
and a few other photos: a delighted audience, the sound and video-recording team, instrumentalists and singers. And a well-done!!
A great evening was had by all. A huge thank you to all the band, especially to Rach W, Nicole and Colin N for all their rehearsing and preparation for which was again a wonderful concert!
Happy Christmas from New York, New York!!
